Costume Photos

Fiona
Outfit 1:
Fiona wears outfit 1 throughout the morning scene. They're a pair of pyjamas with cartoon detailing on them. They represent that Fiona is usually not all too bothered about what she wears while she's at home as she's happy to lounge around in her pyjamas.

Outfit 2:
Fiona wears outfit 2 while at the party. She wears a gold one shoulder dress with black wedge heels so that she looks completely different as she looks somewhat fashionable and nothing like her usual, carefree self.

 Alice

Alice wears a low cut, long, flowing maxi dress to show that she's very up-to-date with the latest fashion and very feminine and girly.

Kieran

Kieran wears a burgandy tight top tucked into grey skinny jeans, with a sleak black belt and white converse, he wears clothes typical of an 18 year old male up-to-date with fashion

Chris

Chris wears a fairly tight fitting striped green shirt to show off his broad physique that he's proud of, straight leg jeans and grey boat shoes. Like Kieran, he wears clothing typical of an 18 year old male who is up-to-date with male fashion.
Emily
Emily wears a quirky red velvet dress to show that she's up-to-date with fashion but she likes to add a bit of her own edge to what she wears.

Short Film analysis

The film begins by setting the scene with an establishing shot showing us an isolated peaceful field, with the title ‘LOVEFIELD’ shown in white lettering over the landscape. We hear diegetic wind effects which very much fit the titles as they drift on and off screen, followed by typical thriller type music with an eerie feel which is played throughout the majority of the film varying from low to high pitches to create suspense giving the film a harsh feel. The wide shots in the introduction show us that civilization must be far away, meaning that there wouldn’t be many people around. After exploring different depths of the corn fields we reach a road sign squeaking with the wind, the camera then slowly pans up the sign creating tension, to reveal a black crow in a close up shot which could mean it is important to the film. Crows are often used in films to
show trouble or death and the fact that the crow is shown and heard a lot througho
ut the film could give us an indication that the film makers are trying to portray that something bad has happened. The camera explores the corn fields even more to hear a constant beeping noise from a phone of what could be a phone line cut off which gets louder as the camera becomes closer to it without the item being shown creating intensity.

The camera then shows the phone as well as money scattered on the floor as well as a blood stained tissue emphasizing danger and creating confusion to the audience. We suddenly hear shrieks from a person followed by seeing a clenched foot giving the impression of pain, which instantly makes you think of the worst. The music then reaches a higher pitch as does the yelling, which then comes to an unexpected silence giving the impression of death. Suddenly we then see a hand which looks like it would be that of a male digging a sharp object which looks to be a knife covered in blood into the ground, scaring the audience and making them jump which adds to the genre of the film. The sound of the crow and the music is introduced again but this time at a faster pace with the music reaching a very high pitch. A pan up a man’s body occurs which we presume is the owner of the knife, which reveals a tattoo o
f a skull on his arms which may be another sign of death and danger. His ragged working style clothes and baseball cap and the fact he looks quite sweaty makes him look slightly suspicious. An over the shoulder shot is then shown with the man looking at the crow as he squawks faster where a pull focus is introduced. We then see the man looking around which may be to see if anyone else is around then suddenly begins to run, the hand held show if his legs makes us presume that he is running away, whereas he is actually running towards a car. Instead of getting in his car and driving away, the man nervously try’s to open the boot with a set of keys, the fact that he doesn’t know which key to use to open it suggests that it isn’t his car, but his victims. The crow in the background begins to get louder and more regular, as if it is wanting help keeping the audience at unease. After opening the boot of the car we see a mid-shot from the inside of the car to the man followed by the man rummaging through the boot. A tapping noise is made on the top of the car, here he looks up onto the roof to see the crow, the man looks very
confused but then carries on and pulls out a cloth.

He walks back to the mysterious body lying on the floor which we presume is either hurt or dead, where cuts from the man to the crow occur where they match eye contact. A low angle shows the man dropping to his knees with the music becoming harsher with more violent strings, which you think is preparing you for the horror you are going to see. However, a new born crying baby is presented with the woman who we thought to have been dead holding it in her arms. The facial expression on the man goes from nervous to relief he smiles and says ‘it’s a boy’ a close up of the mother is shown emphasizing her smile whispering ‘thank you’ which is the only dialogue in the film which very much keeps y
ou in suspense and concentrating on the film. The film ends with crow creating a much happier squaring sound, with uplifting music and a brighter picture giving it a neutral feeling. An establishing shot then shows the corn fields, a tractor and the care along with a police car arriving, which explains the phone at the beginning.

I really enjoyed the unexpected twist in the film which makes the audience suspect something really bad has happened such as death; however it was the opposite that had occurred- birth. I think the film is very conventional short film due to the few characters which works well, the fact that even though it is a short film it still has a beginning, middle and end as well as the minimal dialog creating the music playing a very big part in the film. It also has conventions of a drama such as the music that creates suspense, unrevealing shots, build up in the narrative as well as the child birth and police intervention taking you on a ‘roller-coaster ride of emotions’. The film also challenges stereotypes as the man who seems like an evil killer is in fact a helpful farmer, sending across a message not to judge a book by its cover and that everything may not always be as it seems.

Difficult Shots

We have numerous shots on our media project which we have never attempted before, yet will allow out film to be more advanced and fluent.

Pulling Focus Tutorial

The very first difficult shot we will encounter within our film is when Fiona is waking up in bed and placing her glasses on her face. We are wanting to switch the focus on the camera so that it suddenly becomes the point of view of Fiona before she places her glasses onto her face. This shot will involve the focus starting off distorted then clearing and becoming focused the closer the glasses are to her face. Once the glasses are placed in her head the camera will have gained focus once more.

Driving Scene - Scary Movie Two

The second shot we have that is difficult is when Fiona is driving to the party. Since we need one person to film the driving scene there should only need to be two people in the car, Fiona and the person filming. We need to achieve the correct angle so the reflection of the person filming isn't visible anywhere within the car. Making it hard since all windows are slightly reflective and the shot we will need to film will have at least one mirror in the frame. The car will also be moving, so the camera will need to be held still even over the bumpy roads we will encounter.

Hand Held Filming - Handheld Horror

The third shot we will encounter is hand held filming. We are wanting to achieve a hand held perspective from someone filming the events of the party without showing the filming through a different camera. However we need to ensure that the hand held filming fits with the rest of our film and doesn't look too out of place.

Treatment

Film Title: Misguided
Production Company: Green Apple Productions
Target Audience: Mainly teens, 15 -25

Brief Synopsis:
Sadistic story about the struggle for individuality and acceptance within a teenagers life. The film starts with Fiona, who's around 18 waking up in her room. She seems like your average intelligent teenager, focused on her studies. The girl, like many others has a facebook page, which she accesses when she finishes her revision, to receive a message from one of her friends, Alice. The voiceover of the girls conversation on-line lets us know that she is being invited to a party. Like any other girl she rushes to decide on her outfit. Time passes as the girl gets ready. She drives to the party, excited and singing. When she arrives, she realises she doesn't know anyone, she recognises faces, but no names. The girl is offered a drink of alcohol, which she refuses, before later accepting an invite to stay over, along with a drink. The girl parties and starts to enjoy herself. The group starts discussing drugs, and reveals a packet of what looks like E's. Fiona gets uncomfortable and leaves, saying she needs to use the bathroom. We see shots of the girl and the events downstairs. A hand appears on the screen placing a pill into Fiona's drink. Fiona appears back downstairs, taking a sip of her drink. Various shots of Fiona getting more involved in the party, before passing out. Fiona wakes in the morning, finding herself laid on a bed, her make-up and clothes ruined. Theres a note on the bedside table waiting for her, Fiona reads the note 'Gr8 time last nite... but i'm sure you'll keep it to yourself, won't you? x'

Suggested Elements:
Unexpected ending, voiceover, drugs, alcohol, use of car.

Suitable only for 15 years and over
No one younger than 15 may see a ‘15’ film in a cinema. No one younger than 15 may rent or buy a ‘15’ rated video work.

Discrimination
The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour. (There is no discrimination within our film)

Drugs
Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse. The misuse of easily accessible and highly dangerous substances (for example, aerosols or solvents) is unlikely to be acceptable. (Drugs are a main part of the film, as fiona (geek) is asked if she wanted some, and then she is drugged, it is placed into her drink. This is one of the reasons fiona is so vulnerable and gets raped)

Horror
Strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualised. (No Horror occurs)

Imitable behaviour
Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied. Easily accessible weapons should not be glamorised. (Peer Pressure may be imitative, but nothing is dwelled upon)

Language
There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, ‘fuck’). The strongest terms (for example, ‘cunt’) may be acceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repeated use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable. (No Strong language is scripted throughout the film, however swearing may be heard within the background of the party scene)

Nudity
Nudity may be allowed in a sexual context but without strong detail. There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context. (No Nudity is visible within our short film)

Sex
Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable unless justified by context. Works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal or stimulation are unlikely to be acceptable. (Rape is suggested throughout the short film, but the rape scene isn't physically shown)

Theme
No theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is appropriate for 15 year olds.

Violence
Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is also unlikely to be acceptable. There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence but any portrayal of sexual violence must be discreet and have a strong contextual justification. (The only violent part of our film is the evidence of the rape on the face of fiona when she's wakes up to the aftermath of the party)

Script Rough

Props

Alcohol: We use alcohol within the party scene, to emphasise the fact that alcohol abuse/house parties can have dramatic consequences such as rape and unprotected sex.

Car Keys: The cars keys are used to emphasise a note which they're left next to at the end of the film, the note is used as a threat to the girl, not to tell anyone about what happened.

Laptop: The laptop is used near the beginning of the film, it is used to suggest the main characters personality as her home page is 'my maths' and also shows the geek getting invited to the house party over face book even invitation.

Books: College books are used in the beginning scenes, when the geek is waking up, on her bed; this suggest that the geek doesn't really have anything else on her mind, except college work and revision that the books are there even when she wakes up.

Glasses: the glasses are used in the beginning, when she wakes up; her vision is all blurry and it focuses on her glasses to emphasise her need for them; the geek turns up to the house party without any glasses on, focusing on her dramatic change of personality.

Car: we use a car, for the destination from the geeks house, to the house party, this represents the transformation made from a geek to a beautiful 'normal' partying girl.

Ecstasy  Drug: this is that drug that is used to make fiona pass out in order for her to get raped, this ends up being the plan all along.

Little Pink watch: Fiona wears this all of the time, and when she's in the car, she uses this to indicate the time, to suggest how early she has turned up to the party.

Genre

" In film, genre refers to the method based on similarities in the narrative elements from which films are constructed. Most theories of film genre are borrowed from literacy film criticism. As with genre in a literary context, there is a great deal of debate over how to define or categorize genres. Besides the basic distinction in genre between fiction and documentary, film genres can be categorized in several ways. "

The main film genres are:

Action- Which generally contain physical stunts and chases, fights, natural disasters and escapes which a big-budget is often needed for. Action films can also be adventurous and often two-dimensional.

Adventures- Often have exciting story lines which sometimes feature unusual and exotic locations, and is paired with the action film genre. They can include traditional swashbucklers searches for the unknown or lost continents and disaster films.

Comedy- Have light-hearted plots and deliberately designed to amuse and make people laugh through the language, exaggeration, relationships and the characters. Other forms of comedy such as spoofs, romantic comedies and black comedies often fall under this genre.

Crime- Developed around the actions of criminals who can often be hoodlums who go against the laws such as robbers and murderers.

Drama- Have serious story lines, usually portraying realistic characters, life situations and involving intense character development. They are usually not focussed on comedy, special-effects or action. Dramatic films are one of the largest film genre with many sub categories such as historical dramas, teen dramas and dramatic biographic films.

Epics/ Historical- Include costume dramas, historical dramas, war films and period films that often cover a large expanse of time with a panoramic backdrop. Epics often share elements of adventure films and elaborate on them. Epics take a historical or imagined event, legendary, myth or heroic figure with extravagant settings accompanied by unusual costume.

Horror- Designed to frighten and invoke worst fears, often have a scary or shocking ending. Horrors usually feature a variety of styles which include in today's time CGI monsters and animals and deranged humans. Sometimes they are combined with science fiction when earth is threatened by aliens or corruption of technology.

Musical- Are cinematic forms that emphasize song and dance routines in a significant way (usually with a musical performance integrated as as part of the film narrative) or films that are centred on combinations of music, song, dance and choreography. A major sub-genres is musical comedy.

Science fiction- Often are visionary and imaginative with heroes, distant planets, aliens, futuristic technology, extraordinary people/monsters, quests, unusual settings and villians. They sometimes share similarities with action/adventure films. They often express the potential of technology to destroy human kind and easily overlaps horror films.

War- Films acknowledge the horror and heartbreak of war, fighting on land sea or in the air which form the plot and background for the film. Other genres such as action, adventure and drama are popularly paired with war films.

Westerns- Which over time have been redefined, re-invented and expanded and spoofed. They are one of the oldest, most enduring genres with very recognizable plots, elements and characters (dusty towns and trails, cowboys, Indians etc.)
